Jack placed the large shell next to his ear. At first he did not hear just one voice, but many. Some were shouting, a few were singing and the rest were barely above a whisper. The sound nearly caused him to go insane. As he continued to listen, one voice after another was silenced until only one voice remained.

“…It is the last hour… They went out from us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not us. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you have knowledge…” The voice said so rapidly that Jack had a difficult time keeping up with the words.

“I- I am not sure that I understand.” Jack said.

“…I speak to you now, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is the truth… Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you, for the world is passing away along with its desires…”

“Honey, I am really sorry to interrupt, but we have company!” Charlotte said.

Jack looked up and saw the flashing lights of two squad cars approaching from the distance.

“Hey! We are all out of time here!” He said to the shell.

There was a short period of silence before the voice resumed.

“I need you to hold this shell up in the palm of your left hand and have your wife place her hand upon it with you. Then you will place the palm of your right hand upon the dashboard of the automobile…”

“What happens next?” Charlotte said.

The two of them had turned around in their seats to gaze in wonder at the mysterious shell that had appeared on the backseat.

“Tell me more about the dream you had.” Jack whispered.

“It was very odd, surreal… More than most dreams, at least. I remember seeing two versions of you sitting side by side. I was trying to walk toward where both of you were sitting, but only remained in the same place. I relived the scene of fainting just inside of the front door once again…”

“Go on…”

“The next thing I remember was walking through pure darkness and being drawn toward a glowing shell- That shell!” She paused to point at it.

“It is exactly the same?”

She nodded.

“I heard a voice speaking inside of the shell so I picked it up and placed it to my ear. It told me things that I am not supposed to repeat… And then it guided me into a beautiful tunnel of light. Guided me back to consciousness and a new life.”

Jack reached back between the two front seats and stretched his arm out toward the shell. He could feel raw energy pouring out from within it. He wrapped his hand around it and realized that all of the hairs on his arm were standing on end.

“Look, my whole arm is trembling!” He said to Charlotte as he maneuvered the shell back between the two seats.

“Did you hear that?” Charlotte said. “It is speaking to you.”

“The pain!” Charlotte cried out as she writhed in agony behind the steering wheel. The high-pitched frequency pealed out of the speakers with even more intensity. The mounting pressure was so horrible that she was no longer able to open her eyes.

The car rocked back and forth with a sudden, violent movement- As if the tires were about to lift up off of the pavement. A moment later the sound from the stereo clicked off and the lights on the dash stopped flashing. The engine sputtered once and then died.

“Huh? What the-” Jack said. He lowered his hands from the side of his head. He checked the rearview mirrors and glanced ahead through the windshield. He expected to see a swarm of either robots or officers ready to haul them away- But found nothing other than the same flow of traffic as before.

“What happened?” Charlotte said.

“I am not sure, it-”

Before Jack could finish the sentence there was a flash of blinding white light from the backseat of the vehicle. He turned around in his seat and saw a large shell resting between the cat carrier and the backpack.

“Look!”

“It is from the dream!” Charlotte said. “When I saw you on the couch and fainted I dreamed of this same shell! I should be shocked by it materializing within the car, but after everything that has happened today…”

“Behold! I tell you a mystery.” Jack whispered. “We shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.”

Charlotte screamed out a few random curse words and struck the steering wheel as the car parked itself on the side of the road. All of the lights on the dashboard continued to flash at such a dizzying rate that it made her think of a few dozen miniature strobe lights blinking in unison. The traffic continued to pass by them as if nothing was going on.

“ANY ATTEMPT TO FLEE OR RESIST ARREST WILL BE MET WITH VIOLENCE.” The robotic voice boomed through the stereo speakers once more.

“I knew we would not make it.”

“I am not giving up yet!” Jack said. He unfolded the blade of the knife and started sawing away at the fabric of the locked seatbelt. The belt had tightened around him at the same moment that the car had been hacked- Constricting so tightly that he was having a difficult time breathing.

“What are you doing?”

“If I can cut through our seatbelts before they get here maybe we can break a window and escape on foot!”

“Jack, this whole road is covered with surveillance cameras! We will not make it more than a few blocks before they surround us!”

Without warning a high pitched squeal issued from the stereo speakers. Jack dropped the knife and covered both of his ears with his hands. Charlotte twisted in pain behind the wheel and yelled out something that he was unable to decipher.

The sound created a pressure in Jack’s temples that was so intense he wondered if his skull was going to rip in two. More electromagnetic weapons. He thought.
