Jack latched the front of the cat carrier and picked the small cage up by the handle. Hermes meowed loudly from within.
“Shhh, buddy. It’s okay.” He said. But this whole situation is far from okay. Jack thought. What he had learned in just one day from talking to Charlotte and reading through the old journals had left him feeling no different than the animal- Another life form confined by the ever watchful eye of a prison planet.
He walked back to the living room and placed the carrier on the ground next to the tent. Charlotte was kneeling in front of the backpack a few feet away. She held the flap shut with one hand while guiding the zipper up and around the side of the bag.
“I added a few more groceries and cat food. Oh, and I managed to fit your journals in here, too.” She said.
“Thanks, honey.” Jack said. He offered his hand and helped her to her feet.
“It‘s time, then?”
She nodded. “I think so.”
“Your hands are trembling.”
Charlotte laughed. “Yeah…”
“I do not know what happens next, but we will find a way to walk through the fire.” Jack said. He picked the knife up from the nearby table.
Charlotte took a deep breath.
“Ready?” She said.
“Yes. Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you something.”
“You look really sexy with your hair down.”
Charlotte winked at him. She unlocked and opened the front door.
