Charlotte pulled into the small parking lot behind the condominium that she called home and parked the car in the assigned space. She rolled up the windows and gathered all of her things before exiting the car and locking it.
The drive back from the cemetery had given her time to reflect upon all of the days she had enjoyed with Jack. Even the bad days had become treasured memories.
I somehow managed not to cry on the way home this time. She thought.

But don’t take any of this for granted. It was only yesterday that you were outsiders
She walked down the short path that led from the parking lot to the front of the building. The muscles in her legs and her feet were sore from work and climbing the two flights of stairs to the condo certainly did not help the situation.
Three days off. Charlotte reminded herself. I’m going to start off with a hot bath and then I’ll curl up on the couch with a book.

As she reached the top stair she realized that a praying mantis was clinging to the side of the railing and watching her.
I wonder if it’s real. Charlotte thought. There were so many fake, robotic insects used by the government to spy on people that she always had to question which ones were genuine.
She pulled the keys from her purse and turned away from the mantis. She moved over to the front door and slid a key into the lock. She turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.
