The high-pitched tone continued. The sound was earsplitting as it penetrated through his skull and stabbed into his brain.

Jack stumbled inside and slammed the door shut. He discovered that his balance was way off- It felt like the floor was moving under his feet. He stopped walking and leaned back against the door for support.

He placed his hands over his ears in a futile attempt to block the frequency. His vision was blurred and he suddenly had such a severe headache that tears were

welling up in the corners of his eyes.

It seemed crazy, but it was almost like his mind had been invaded by the sound. Memories started surfacing, inexplicably, that he had not recalled in years.

A childhood birthday party that had ended with his parents fighting. Then breaking his ankle in a freak accident when he was a teenager. The first time he had kissed Charlotte. Standing in a black suit at his first art gallery show…

It’s like my mind is a file

cabinet and someone is randomly snooping through the files.

He clenched his hands into fists. A deep breath in through the nostrils and then out through the mouth. He closed his eyes and whispered a brief prayer for strength.

Jack perceived the robot waiting for him outside and the frequency as belonging to the same type of high-tech evil. He focused his mind on the only thing that could truly defeat evil: Love.

The painful tone ceased immediately and the room was silent.
