“Please! Do not do this!”

“I don’t have a choice- They have us surrounded!” Jack said. “Start gathering what we will need. I will be right back.”

Jack pulled his wife close and kissed her once again. He turned and walked confidently out of the bedroom without speaking another word. He paused in the living room next to an antique crucifix that had been hanging on the wall since they had moved into the condo. He closed his eyes and said a brief prayer before opening the front door and walking outside.

“Wait!” Charlotte said.

“Sorry?”

“This is all happening so fast! I had planned on relaxing and enjoying my three day weekend, but now my home is surrounded by Sentries and you want to-”

“Shhh.” Jack raised his index finger to his lips. He picked up the notebook and the pen and started writing another note.

Charlotte leaned forward so that she was able to read each word as it was scrawled upon the page. His handwriting has not changed at all. She thought.

We are going to attempt to reach the place you mentioned – At least for a day or two – To regroup and figure out what we are going to do next.

I need you to quickly pack a few supplies – Food, clothing – Whatever you think we will need. We will come back for more stuff when we can.

Did you throw out all of my clothes? Do you have any weapons other than the knife? Oh, and don’t worry about the Sentries- I’m going down there to eliminate them before we load the car.

–[Charlotte's response]–

I have to change out of these clothes first and foremost. It won’t take long to gather a few supplies – That is not a problem.

But I cannot guarantee that we will be able to reach the destination – It’s a long drive, and it will be another miracle if we can travel that far without being stopped.

I do still have a few articles of your clothing in a box that I held onto for sentimental reasons. And no, unfortunately, I do not have any weapons that I can think of – Even the knife is technically illegal.

How exactly do you plan on fighting those things? It is a suicide mission – I am not going to watch those machines rip you to shreds right after you have been returned to me!

“Okay,” Jack said. “Before we continue this conversation…” He leaned toward Charlotte and whispered in her ear. “Do you have a notebook and a pen we can use to write notes back and forth?”

“Yes, out in the living room.” She stood up and was walking out of the door when she paused and turned back around. “Whispering is pointless.” She rolled her eyes.

“Oh? Why is that?”

“Ever since the smart meters were installed they can listen to everything inside of the home. It does not matter if you whisper or shout at the top of your lungs.”

“I had no idea.” Jack watched her exit the bedroom. He stood up from the bed and walked back over to the window. He peered out between the blinds and observed the three Sentries. The one on the left turned and stared directly at him.

“Might be a good idea to stay away from that window.” Charlotte said.

She handed Jack a small notebook and a ballpoint pen. He opened to a random blank page and scribbled a few words down before turning it around so Charlotte could read it.

Is there somewhere safe that we can go?

She shrugged and then took the notebook and pen from him. It was her turn to jot down a note-

I know of a place just outside of the city. But they will try to stop us on the way to the car!

Jack grabbed the pen and responded to this while Charlotte held onto the notebook.

We have to try – We cannot just sit around here and wait for them to kill us!

“Then what are we waiting for?” Jack said. “There are only three of those things out there. I am confident that I can take them out. In the version of the world I left behind we have a few guns and-”

“Nope.” Charlotte interrupted him. “Not over here, not anymore.”

“What do you mean?”

“A few months before you were killed an executive order was passed that totally obliterated the second amendment.”

“You have to be kidding me!” Jack said.

“Without the complicity of the mainstream media the entire thing would have failed. Even movie stars who have made millions of dollars as action heroes spoke out against the right to keep and bear arms.”

“But all throughout history after people are disarmed-”

“The real tyranny begins.” Charlotte finished the sentence for him. “Yes, I know.”

“Well, this is just wonderful!” He started pacing back and forth across the room again. “This just keeps getting better and better!”

“Most of the people were brainwashed into believing that it was the right thing to do. Defending gun rights was presented as something controversial and taboo, so most people avoided any discussion about it.”

“The fools!” Jack said. “Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked!”

“We are going to have to figure something out,” Charlotte said. “It is only a matter of time until they decide to kick that door in and come after us.”

“The cut on your palm has healed.” Charlotte said.

Jack nodded. “Yes, and all of the blood is gone as well.”

Charlotte looked down at her own hands and gasped.

“What is it?” He said.

“Earlier this afternoon I was visiting your grave. I was on the edge of the cemetery when I placed my hands upon a barbed wire fence. I screamed at the sky as the metal pierced my skin. I remember the pain. I looked down at the cuts- But now…”

“They have been healed.”

Charlotte walked back over to the bed and sat down on the corner of the mattress. She placed her hands upon her knees and stared down at the floor with a confused expression.

He sent forth his word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave.” Jack muttered.

“What was that?”

“Oh, I am just beginning to realize that certain things are much more literal than the average person has ever dared to believe.”

“The fact that our wounds have been healed is amazing,” Charlotte said. “But the Sentries have shown themselves to be capable of extreme violence.”

“You said that they were part human, though. You called them Transhumanists. Well, has anybody ever killed one?” Jack said.

“Yes, of course. When the electronic global currency was established and the public was told that they no longer had the Bill of Rights there was a huge uprising. The Sentries were used as shock troops in most of the major cities. Hundreds of them were killed, maybe thousands.”

“Spiritual warfare,” Charlotte said. “Yes, you are absolutely correct. But most of the people who still remain- The ones that have not been killed or chemically lobotomized- They do not even believe that they have souls.”

“Well, they really do not.” Jack said.

Her eyebrows raised with confusion and uncertainty.

They are souls!” He said.

“Ah, of course! But how can a couple of people possibly stand against all of this? It is simply impossible!”

Jack nodded and started pacing in front of the bed again.

“I agree. We do not have a prayer in hell.” He said. “That is why everyone will have to put aside their fear and all of their petty differences to stand together. Should have happened long ago…”

You do realize that those things out there are still listening to us, right?” Charlotte said under her breath as she gestured toward the window.

He shrugged. “Let them listen. If they want to strip me of my inalienable rights then I will rip their metallic heads right off of their damned necks!”

He raised the fist that contained the blood from the small cut and smashed it into the nearest wall. The drywall cracked and crumpled from the sudden impact.

“Hey,” Charlotte said. She did not flinch while watching him. “Is your hand okay?”

He unclenched his fingers and looked down at his palm to discover that both the cut and the blood had disappeared.

“Never mind. I have a feeling that everything will be revealed when the time is right.” Charlotte said before he had a chance to respond.

They are rewriting genetics as well? Jack thought to himself.

“The important thing is that you are here with me. We are in this together again.” She leaned forward and wrapped her arms around him.

Jack pulled her close and she started sobbing uncontrollably on his shoulder.

“We buried you in that little cemetery out in the country just like you wanted.” She said while the tears released two years of suppressed grief and sorrow.

“I went out and visited you as much as possible-” Her sentence was interrupted as sobs wracked her body. “I prayed that you would somehow return to me- But I never thought it would actually happen!”

“It’s okay, babe.” He said. “I think I know why I have been given another chance here.”

“Really?” Charlotte pulled back from the embrace. “Why?”

“We are meant to stand with free humanity during her darkest hour- To face the insidious evil that has been allowed to gather strength for far too long and remind everyone that they have the most powerful weapon of all time at their disposal: Love.”

The corners of her mouth moved to form a smile and the sobbing subsided considerably.

“When it is all said and done, all of this-” Jack said. “Every form of control used to suppress the people- It is only a clever mask to hide the real objective: Spiritual warfare!”

“You were floating in outer space?” Charlotte said.
Jack nodded. “Yes. I was pulled into a forgotten star and consigned to oblivion. I know that more happened before I woke up, but it is only a fleeting dream now. I cannot grasp onto any of the details…” He had a strange faraway look in his eyes.
“So the version of America that you left behind had not fallen to corruption and tyranny? People still valued life and freedom there?”
He chuckled. “No, not exactly. It was just a different flavor, I guess. A group of the scientific elite had taken control, but it was not as blatantly obvious as it is here.”

“We did not have to deal with Sentries and spy devices in everything.” Jack said. “Well, I was not aware of such things if they were present.” He took a deep breath and shook his head.

“The earth itself had been under siege- The people and all other forms of life suffered the consequences. Huge airplanes would crisscross the sky all day and night dumping and spraying a chemical concoction everywhere.”

“It was getting so bad that the crops would not grow anymore. The trees were so poisoned and brittle that they were simply falling over. Various toxins were being added to nearly every facet of the food supply at an alarming rate-”

“Jack,” Charlotte interrupted him. “You are talking about things that happened many years ago in this world. You really do not remember how they genetically altered everything to withstand the contamination?”

Charlotte watched as Jack lowered the knife to his hand. What if he doesn’t bleed? She thought. What then?

Jack used the tip of the blade to make a tiny cut in the center of his palm. Blood was visible almost immediately.
“There! Are you convinced now?” He said. He closed the knife and placed it on top of the dresser next to where they were standing.
Charlotte nodded slowly. “Okay, I believe you. But that still does not explain how you returned from the dead.”

“It all happened when I was out walking on a trail today. I was traveling down an old road that was blocked off from the public when everything started to change. Reality was very thin there.” Jack said. He closed his hand into a fist in an attempt to contain the blood.
“A strange hum was coming from the ground- A rhythmic, peaceful vibration that seemed both familiar and alien at the same time. The trees and the plants started changing, morphing to form complex symmetrical patterns.”

“A deer was watching me from the forest on the side of the road. I followed it to a wooded valley where I crumpled to the ground. The melodic hum had a profound effect upon my mind- Like a deep trance or a spell.”
“Then you woke up here?” Charlotte said.
“No- Not right away. In between losing consciousness in the forest and waking up in this world I was drifting through outer space. I encountered the spectral form that I mentioned earlier. It was the beginning and the end.”

“Stay away from me!” Charlotte said. She slid her hand into the right front pocket of her blue jeans and pulled out a small knife. She flipped the blade out and backed even further away.

“Baby- Wait! Listen to what you are saying-” Jack said. He stood up from the bed and took a tentative step toward her.
“Do not come any closer! I am not kidding around! You just materialize here after I know you were dead- It is the only logical explanation I can think of!” She raised the knife and glared at him

with fierce intensity.
“Everything that has happened today defies logic! How could you possibly think that I am one of those things standing around outside! I do not look like that at all-” Jack said.
Charlotte shook her head. “No, you don’t. But that does not mean anything! The newscasters on the television have been saying that the newer models are different- Better, improved. They can blend in with a crowd of real people and no one can tell who the Sentries are!”

Jack lunged forward and grabbed onto her wrist.
“No! Don’t-”
“Charlotte, I do not want to hurt your wrist! Please believe me. I am telling you the truth!”
Her lower lip trembled and tears streaked down from her eyes.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore!” She said.
“These things, the Sentries- Do they bleed like we do?”
“No.” She allowed him to pry the knife loose from her grip. He used the blade to cut into the palm of his other hand

“This means that they have been listening to our conversation since I woke up.” Charlotte said. She walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed next to Jack.
“Really? How? I’m not getting the splitting headache like earlier when one of those things was rooting around in my brain.” Jack said.
Charlotte shook her head. “That’s different. Only some of them are powerful enough to read minds. The rest just tap into the digital grid.”
“Meaning?”

“All of it.” She swept her hand across the room. “The phones, the televisions and all of the other electronic devices and appliances. Hell, even the streetlights and the light bulbs. They all function as spy devices now. Everything monitors everyone all the time.”
“You’re kidding me.”
“I am not kidding you, Jack. All of these devices normally just pick up on wireless data and transmit it to be analyzed. But when a Sentry is nearby they can tap in to listen and watch what‘s going on.”

“Why are they just standing around, then?” Jack said.
“I have no idea. Maybe they are confused because you are listed as dead. Maybe they are waiting for a drone strike. Or–” She stopped talking and her eyes opened wide with alarm.
“Char? Or what?”
“Or this has all been an elaborate setup! Maybe you have not returned from the dead at all- Maybe you’re one of them!” She stood up and started backing away from where Jack was sitting.
“That’s ridiculous!” Jack said.

“I don’t know about someone kicking in the door,” Jack said. “But I went out for a cigarette earlier and some sort of robot was trying to read my mind!”
“What? What did it look like?” Charlotte said. She leaned forward on the bed with a worried expression.
Jack described the strange android in the black suit to her and explained the painful sensation of having his memories scanned.
“That was a Sentry, Jack! That means they know you’re here and I’m sure they have the place surrounded by now.”

She raced over to the nearest window and peered out between the blinds.
“What the hell is a Sentry?” Jack said as he walked over to join her.
“Look!” She pointed at the window. “Three of them are hanging out in the alleyway right now!”
Jack peered out at the figures and felt a chill running down his spine. “Those things cannot be human!”
“They were human once upon a time…” Charlotte said. “They are members of what was once called the transhumanist movement- People hell-bent upon merging man and machine.”

“Well, it looks like they succeeded.” Jack said as he backed away from the window.
“Just one of many groups you were investigating when you were killed. You really don’t remember any of this, do you?” She said.
He shook his head. “Reading through the journals conjured up a few vague memories, but even my death remains a mystery!”

“It is not just in your imagination, my love.” Charlotte said.
“What do you mean?”
“Privacy is dead. Everything is monitored and recorded. Stored on supercomputers to be analyzed and categorized. Nothing is secret and, apparently, nothing is sacred.”
Bullshit.” Jack muttered under his breath. “Whatever happened to freedom?”
“After the wars spiraled out of control and the value of the dollar crashed the masses were convinced by the mainstream media to trade in their freedom for security- But, ironically, they ended up with neither.”

“On my way here this afternoon I saw a van drive by that had people in the back with black cloth bags covering their heads!” He said.
Charlotte nodded. “Happens almost everyday. People will just suddenly disappear.”
“And then what?”
She shrugged. “Some are sent to torture camps, others are just killed outright. The rest are sent to reeducation camps.”

Reeducation camps?” Jack said.
“Brainwashing. Mind control.”
“I- I cannot even fathom all of this right now! It is all just too much!” He stood up and started pacing back and forth at the foot of the bed.
“There is only one thing that I cannot figure out.” Charlotte said. “The security cameras would have scanned and identified you on the way here. They know that you have returned from the dead. So why hasn’t anyone kicked in the door yet?”

1)

“Well,” Jack said. “I do not even know where to start. I discovered my obituary shortly after I returned to the condo. That was a very uncomfortable thing to read, to say the least.”
“And you were not home, Char. I did not know where you were- Or if you were even going to return!”
Charlotte reclined back on the pillow and remained silent.
“Then I saw the stack of old journals. I randomly picked one and started reading through it. There are a few similarities between the life I left behind and

this one- But many other events and details are completely different…”
Jack shook his head. “I just cannot understand how people have allowed the country to go to hell like this- Endless wars, roving homeless, and unimaginable amounts of debt. Riots and swat teams all over the place, secret arrests and torture- This is pure insanity!”
“I know.” Charlotte said. “It was really bad when you passed away, but over the last two years the tyranny has only intensified. It is like a festering wound.”

3)

“There was a journal entry in there about…” Jack trailed off in mid-sentence. He suddenly had a faraway look in his eyes. “About…” He lost his train of thought again and remained sitting in place upon the edge of the bed.
“Jack?” Charlotte said.
“I… I just had the strangest sensation. It felt like we were being watched by a bunch of people with electronic devices. There was a typed transcript of the conversation we’re having off to the side and photos of us sitting here in this room!”

1)

Charlotte pulled away from the embrace and held her husband at arm’s length. She looked up at his face. Her blue eyes were shimmering with fiery fascination.
Jack laughed. “I am real!” He said. “I cannot explain the forces that allowed me to cross over to this world today- But the spectral form I encountered in outer space-I think it was God…”
“This other place that you left behind-” Charlotte paused mid-sentence. She suddenly remembered what the voice in her dream had told her:

2)

He believes that he has crossed over from his world and into another dimension. Even though this is not exactly what has happened to him it is imperative that he believes this explanation until the time is right.’
“Yes?” Jack said.
“Was I there, too?”
“Of course you were there! We had just recently celebrated our fifteenth anniversary! This morning you had already left for work by the time that I climbed out of bed.”

3)

“Really?” She said.
He nodded. “It was just a typical day. I was working on a painting when I decided to go out for a walk. Hermes was there- Being lazy and rolling around on the ground.”
She chuckled nervously. If the voice was telling the truth then this other version of me- And the cat- Were they just creations in his mind? Charlotte thought. A sort of simulated afterlife that attempted to reconstruct what made him happy and comfortable?
“Please, continue.” She said.

1)

“Yes, it‘s true.” Jack said.
“How is this possible? I don’t understand!” Charlotte said.
Jack walked over and stood next to where she was laying down.
“I’m not sure if I understand everything that has happened today, either.” He said.
Charlotte turned over and slowly rose up to a sitting position. Her expression was a jumbled mixture of joy and fear.
“My life has been hell since you left me here.” She said. A tear was starting to well up in the corner of her eye.

2)

“I know, sweetheart.” Jack said. He shook his head slightly and sighed. “I am truly sorry.”
He sat down on the edge of the mattress beside her and, using the back of his hand, wiped away the tear as it streaked down her cheek.
Charlotte leaned forward and wrapped her arms around him. It was the embrace she had spent two years longing for. The moment that she had been praying for.

Jack placed his hands on her lower back and pulled her close, then nuzzled the side of her neck.

3)

“The world has changed so much…” Charlotte whispered.
“I know.”
“Jack- Everything that you predicted and warned people about, all of your research- It has all happened! The world is spiraling out of control- Consumed by hatred and darkness. Most of the people have been ignoring it, acting like everything is still the same…”
“Shhh. I think everything will be okay. Remember, love conquers all…”
He moved his mouth up to hers and initiated a long, slow kiss.

1)

June 5th -
I had to travel downtown to Natasha Aosoth’s gallery again this morning. She wanted to touch base on the show and make sure that everything was going well.
She asked me a lot of questions and I did my best at avoiding most of the answers.
It was the first time I had ever seen her face emerge from the darkness and, as I searched her countenance for any sign of expression I kept thinking to myself:
I am not so sure that this woman is even human…

2)

Jack closed the journal and placed the hardbacked volume in his lap. He stretched and rubbed at his eyes. Reading about the many experiences from another version of his life was really taking a toll on his mind.
What kind of trouble did I get into here? Jack thought. Some sort of satanic art gallery owner who did not seem to be human?
He had yet to find any real clues that explained his untimely demise- But he was starting to get a bigger picture of what this life had been like.

3)

He longed to go outside and smoke a cigarette but did not want to endure another painful encounter with the android that had been scanning his mind.
Jack was just starting to climb off of the mattress when he had the distinct feeling that he was being watched. He turned around and saw that Charlotte had opened her eyes.
“So it is true.” Charlotte said. “You really have returned to me.”
Her voice was barely above a whisper.

From the Archives [Fictional Machines]

from the archives 1-

Before I started the ongoing ‘Progression‘ series this site was a place for me to publish my new short stories.

Over the course of six months last year I shared no less than thirty-five tales here on Fictional Machines. When added together these fictional yarns total 26, 294 words. I created 68 original images [Some are photographs, some are original drawings and paintings-  And some are a combination of both] to accompany the stories as illustrations.

It was this experimentation with creating a mixture of images and words that led to the eventual beginning of ‘Progression‘ [Which, by the way, will be resuming in the very near future!].

Anyway, most of these short stories have been buried behind the first fifty pages of ‘Progression,’ and then behind the recent slew of awards.  I also removed the sidebar entirely a while back to make each post larger and easier to read, so the ‘Archives’ list is no longer there.

I decided to post this list- A virtual “table of contents” for all of the stories from 2012.

+JUST SIMPLY CLICK UPON THE TITLE OF EACH STORY TO VIEW IT IN A NEW WINDOW+

*

>The Dream Journal Series:

I have shared five of these with the public so far [With 'Dissolution' being the unofficial #0 in the series].  Even though I have not posted any of these for months I have continued to write and illustrate new ones.  These are all based upon real dreams and I have attempted to recreate each dream through words and images.

>>>>>Dream Journal Zero – Dissolution

>>>>>Dream Journal #1 – The Fifteenth of May

>>>>>Dream Journal #2 – The Twenty-Ninth of May

>>>>>Dream Journal #3 – The Fourteenth of June

>>>>>Dream Journal #4 – The Seventeenth of July

*

>Impressions:

These three posts are the first three chapters of a short novel I wrote last year called ‘Impressions.’ It is a suspense / thriller of sorts that deals with technology being turned against the public to bring down a total police state. 1984 on steroids.  The story is finished and copyrighted and I think I’ve found a home for it. I plan to share more of this with you all in the future.  In the mean time…

>>>>>Impressions [Part One: The New Hire]

>>>>>Impressions [Part Two: Lunch]

>>>>>Impressions [Part Three: Friday Night]

*

>The Economic Collapse:

These three stories are not directly related to each other, but the central theme of each is the same-  The economic downturn / hard times / the recession effecting different people in different ways…

>>>>>Another Uncertain Future

>>>>>Another Day, Another Dime

>>>>>Inflamed

*

>Horror:

The four stories listed below are all separate from each other.  They are only grouped together here because each is a dark tale with horror and / or supernatural elements.

>>>>>The Backwoods of Oblivion

>>>>>The Voice of the Damned

>>>>>The Reptiles in Basement Three

>>>>>A Gruesome Discovery

*

>Three attempts at humor:

‘Finger Pointing’ was later published as a cartoon on a news website [With permission], ‘Freedom of Speech’ is really more depressing than funny, and the other one, well…

>>>>>Finger Pointing

>>>>>Freedom of Speech

>>>>>A Romantic Dinner By Candlelight

*

>One attempt at poetry:

>>>>>The Source

*

>Two random stories that are not part of anything:

>>>>>The Alcoholic

>>>>>Water Down

*

>The Jack & Charlotte Altomare stories:

Before ‘Progression’ Jack and Charlotte were the focal characters in thirteen stories published here.  These stories are not directly related to what happens in ‘Progression,’ these would be set in the “regular world,” before Jack crosses over to the “other dimension.”

>>>>>Vacant Branches Reaching Out Across the Bitter Decline of the Day

>>>>>Whiteout

>>>>>The Blue Tint of Tranquility

>>>>>The Sculpture Downtown

>>>>>The Man in the Shadows

>>>>>Postmeridian

>>>>>The Mind’s Eye and the Ticking Clock

>>>>>All that is Necessary…

>>>>>The Ghost Photo

>>>>>Reduce to Silence

>>>>>Inside the [Big] Box

>>>>>Letting Go

>>>>>Preservation

*

>And, finally, a short story that is destined to become a classic on WordPress:

>>>>>The Unknown Blog

B O T Y thirteen-

Fictional Machines was recently awarded the thirteenth [And, for me, the final] star for the Blog of the Year 2012 award by Michelle of yomicfit.wordpress.com! She has a very wonderful blog [One of my absolute favorites] that you can check out –>here<–!

***{Also: I received one nomination for Blog of the Year on my site ArcaneArrangements.Com- The acceptance / nominees for that one can be viewed here: http://arcanearrangements.com/2013/01/16/blog-of-the-year-2012/}***

Blog of the Year Award 6 star jpeg -

The “Blog of the Year” award is a little different from some other awards, because you accumulate stars.

Here are the ‘rules’ for this award:

1] Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award

2] Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award.

3] Please include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award – http://thethoughtpalette.co.uk/our-awards/blog-of-the-year-2012-award/‘

and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)

4 Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them.

5 You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group‘ and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience.

6 As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…

b o t y 6 stars image

Yes – that’s right – there are stars to collect!

Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different!

When you begin you will receive the ‘1 star’ award – and every time you are given the award by another blog – you can add another star!

There are a total of 6 stars to collect.

Which means that you can check out your favorite blogs, and even if they have already been given the award by someone else, then you can still bestow it on them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

For more information check the FAQ on The Thought Palette.

1)

Charlotte placed the conch shell on the ground by her feet. The moment she moved her hand away from it the shell vanished- Swallowed by the darkness.

-
She turned around and saw the tunnel of light the voice had told her about. The white light within it seemed to be pulsing as it swirled in a counterclockwise direction.

-
Charlotte blinked and then she was inside of the tunnel. It was as if she had skipped ahead in time- She was standing there looking at the light and then she

2)

was suddenly floating through it. But the time in between the two was simply missing.

-
So beautiful, so hypnotic. She thought as the light swirled and shifted on all sides.

-
She reached the end and regained the use of her legs. The tunnel closed behind her as quickly and silently as it had appeared.

-
I’m on some sort of island. Charlotte thought. There were two large trees, one on either side. She could see the jagged edge of the island [And could hear water

3)

lapping against it] but everything else had been erased within a vast white void in all directions.

-
“Your sadness has caused you to live in isolation.” The male voice from the shell said. It was no longer a whisper and seemed to be booming out from above her.

-
“Yes.” She said.

-
“Leave your sadness here and return to the your world as a new person.” The voice said.

-
A trail of large rocks and boulders appeared across the water in front of her and Charlotte moved across the rocks.

1)

Charlotte was lost- Wandering through total darkness with no sense of direction or time. She could feel the solid ground beneath her feet, but she could not see it. She was scared to take each step, worried that she was going to trip over something or fall off of the edge.

-
If there really is an edge here. She thought.

-
A tiny pinprick of light appeared directly in front of her and she immediately gravitated towards it.
It appears to be some sort of

2)

glowing shell! Charlotte thought as the object came into view. It looks like a very large conch shell

-
She was reaching out to pick it up when she noticed a soft, distant male voice coming out of the shell. She quickly lifted the shell up to her ear and listened to the voice, which was barely above a whisper:

-
“Again- Jack has been through a lot today. He believes that he has crossed over from his world and into another dimension. Even though this is not exactly what

3)

has happened to him it is imperative that he believes this explanation until the time is right.” The voice seemed familiar to her, and yet she was unable to identify it.

-
“What really happened, then?” Charlotte said. “Has he really returned from the dead?”

-
The voice in the shell ignored her question. “Listen- I need you to set this shell down and then turn around. You will see a tunnel of light behind you. Walk into the light and find your way back to consciousness.”
